A place like no other

Laie Point — known historically as Laniloa Point — sits at the northeastern tip of Oahu, where the Laniloa Peninsula juts into the open Pacific. The surrounding islets are the legendary remains of a great mo'o slain by the demigod Kana.

The famous sea arch in the largest islet was formed by the devastating tsunami of April 1946. Today the point is a beloved State Wayside — a haunt for fishermen, cliff jumpers, birdwatchers, and anyone who wants to see Hawaii at its most raw and beautiful.

Contrary to popular belief, the Point is neither volcanic nor an ancient coral reef. Laie Point is part of the Mokapu Formation. During the Pleistocene epoch — roughly 75,000 to 125,000 years ago — sea levels were significantly lower, and large sand dunes formed along the coast from wind-blown carbonate sand, mostly fragments of shells and coral. As water evaporated, minerals recrystallized, cementing the sand grains into solid rock through a process called lithification. If you look closely at the cliffs, you can see cross-bedding — slanted layers that represent the original slopes of those ancient dunes.

Living on Naupaka Street means waking up to this every day.
